Cataract Treatment

A cataract is a condition defined as the ‘clouding’ of the eye’s natural lens. While this condition is often associated with the aging process, it isn’t the direct cause. Excess protein buildup in the lens is ultimately what causes blurry vision, glare issues, a reduction in color, reduced night vision, and myopia (nearsightedness).

Cataracts are basically irreversible and, unlike other eye issues that can be corrected with glasses or contacts, they can only be addressed with surgical intervention. Cataract surgery essentially involves removing and replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one that provides clear vision. While many patients may feel nervous about eye surgery, the procedure is very quick and only comes with mild discomfort.

Dr. Waring is also known for performing a more advanced form of treatment known as refractive cataract surgery. This approach combines the lens replacement aspect of cataract surgery with the laser correction used to correct issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism. Laser Vision Correction (LASIK)

Beyond that, it is also not considered to be a suitable procedure for patients who are under the age of 18. At this age, patients’ bodies are still changing, meaning that things are not set in place. This applies to the eyes as well. While some patients may wish to undergo LASIK surgery in their teen years, it is best to wait until hormonal fluctuations and other factors have settled down.
