What Is LASIK Eye Surgery in Mount Pleasant SC?

LASIK Mount Pleasant is eye surgery performed with a medical laser system. The purpose of this procedure is to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (a defect in the eye that causes distorted images). Using the most advanced LASIK techniques, Dr. Waring can also correct presbyopia (farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity of the lens, typically occurring in middle or old age).

How Does LASIK Work?

The LASIK technique works by correcting abnormalities in the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye). This procedure can correct a cornea that is too steep (causing myopia), too flat (causing hyperopia), or with a defect in shape (causing astigmatism).

How Is the Mount Pleasant LASIK Procedure Performed?

Our eye surgeon will apply numbing drops in the eyes and may provide additional medication to help you relax during the procedure. The doctor will use a device known as a lid speculum to prevent the eye from blinking during surgery, along with an additional device to stabilize the eye.

The first step of surgery is to create a laser flap in the outer layer of the cornea to provide access. Next, the surgeon will use precise, computer-controlled pulses from a laser to reshape the cornea and correct any imperfections. Finally, the flap in the cornea is placed back into position for healing – no sutures or bandages are required.

What Is Recovery Like after LASIK?

Your eyes will begin healing immediately and rapidly after Mount Pleasant LASIK surgery. You will need someone to drive you home after your procedure is complete. However, most clients are legal to drive without glasses or contact lenses and able to return to work the day after surgery.

You may be instructed to wear sunglasses outdoors and eye shields while sleeping for several days after the procedure. When the numbing eye drops wear off after surgery, you may experience mild burning, itching, and watering of the eyes, but these after-effects are minor. It is important not to rub your eyes during your recovery.

What Are the Benefits of LASIK?

LASIK is a popular procedure to correct vision problems. Advantages of this procedure include:

  • Proven to correct vision in most cases

  • Very little pain or discomfort
  • Fast recovery with no bandages or sutures
