What Is LASIK and What Does It Do?
LASIK is eye surgery using advanced laser techniques. Our skilled eye surgeons perform this procedure to correct abnormalities of the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye). LASIK can correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (distorted images caused by a defect in the eye), and presbyopia (age-related reading problems caused by loss of elasticity of the lens).
At Waring Vision Institute we are proud to provide some of the best LASIK Myrtle Beach SC has to offer for clients who want to have clear, sharp vision.
How Does LASIK Work?
Using state-of-the-art laser systems, LASIK corrects vision problems by changing the shape of the cornea. It can restore a more normal shape to a cornea that is too steep (causing myopia), too flat (causing hyperopia), or have shape imperfections (causing astigmatism). Modern LASIK surgery can also correct presbyopia using a technique called monovision, in which refractive errors in one eye are fully corrected, while the other eye is left mildly nearsighted.
How Is LASIK Surgery Performed?
The actual Myrtle Beach LASIK procedure can be performed in approximately 10 minutes for each eye. Our surgeon will apply numbing drops to help ensure your comfort during surgery. Instruments will be used to stabilize the eye and prevent the eyelid from blinking.
Using a laser, the surgeon first makes a flap in the outer layer of the cornea to provide access and protection. Cells are then removed from the layer underneath the flap to reshape the cornea, correcting minor defects. When reshaping of the cornea is complete, the outer flap is put back in place to act as a bandage during the healing process.
What Is Recovery Like after LASIK Surgery?
One advantage of Myrtle Beach LASIK is a fast, easy recovery. Although clients need someone to drive them home after surgery, most are able to drive and return to normal activities the following day. There are no sutures or bandages, and most clients have improved vision within 24 hours of the procedure.
You can expect to experience mild burning and itching of the eyes after the numbing drops wear off after surgery, but these symptoms are normal and not particularly uncomfortable. It is important not to rub your eyes during the healing process. Our surgeon may instruct you to wear protective sunglasses when outdoors, and eye shields while you sleep during the healing process.
Why Are So Many People Today Having LASIK?
